Hello Readers,
This is our first edition of the New Year and we
hope its going well for all of you.
For our Cover Story this month
“Indian Copyright Act 1957 Revisited”, we take you inside
the Copyright story, where authors and composers are seen fighting
for their rights and the Government is stepping up to amend the law
to bring about more clarity to the system. Caught in the controversy
is the IPRS who is being blamed for the non-payment of royalties. We
bring you thoughts, insights and analysis from key people on all
sides of the story – authors & composers, music labels, IPRS and the
PPL.
“Fight the Bigger Fight”-
brings about a neutral view to the copyright amendment and how the
four stakeholders(music company, producer, composer and lyricist)
should come together to fight the 5th Stakeholder(Pirates)
who takes away major share of the revenue pie from all the four
rightful stakeholder.
The beginning of a year is the time to make plans for the time
ahead, to weigh and contemplate on all possible factors that might
govern the business. In an endeavor to bring out the vision that
might help us forecast the road ahead, we spoke to 10 of the very
best in the Indian music business on vital matters. They include
Vijay Lazarus (President IMI),
Kumar Taurani(Managing
Director TIPS), Rajat Kakkar(Managing
Director Universal India), Sridhar Subramaniam(Managing
Director Song India), T Suresh(General
Manager & India Country Head EMI), Apurva Nagpal(Managing
Director Saregama) Umesh Gupta(Managing
Director Aditya Music), S L Saha
(Director Hindustan Inreco), Vipul Pradhan
(CEO PPL) and Rakesh Nigam
(CEO IPRS) .
The featured artist of the month is the revered
Ghazal king,
Jagjit Singh. He takes us on a journey through his mind
speaking about his life, love for music, fans, inspirations, live
performances, today’s music, effects of technology, dying phase of
Ghazals and his retirement plans in a few years down the line.
Starting with this issue, we
have added a special column titled ‘Striking Chords’. This space and
column is reserved for music industry personalities to speak out on
issues they consider important. These topics are not prompted from
our end; they come from the unquestioned mind of the speaker. What
they chose to address might not necessarily be the ones most spoken
about in the public. Sometimes, you pave way for greater change when
you stray away from popular thought. New points to ponder and act
upon.
Our inaugural guest for
“Striking Chords”
is Sridhar Subramanium, Managing Director, Sony Music India.
Indian
Ocean lost the Man with a Golden Voice,
Asheem Chakravarty on 25th Dec 2009…We are still mourning
the demise of the great musician and offer our respects in a tribute
write-up about him.
Grammy Awards are just round the corner.
The Recording Academy® and EMI Music team up to release the 52nd
annual Grammy Nominees CD. We are giving away a few CDs to
some lucky winners who can answer correctly the questions featured

We have been able to behold a stunning performance
of Pink Floyd’s music at Hard Rock Café Mumbai by a band from Delhi
called
Think Floyd featuring musicians from Parikrama, Advaita,
Themclones with some session musicians courtesy of Artists
Unlimited. It wasn’t as great as seeing Pink Floyd themselves, but
if Pink Floyd we know didn’t exist, you’d think these young
musicians were Pink Floyd in the making!
We have succumbed to Mark Zuckerburg’s calling and
have opened a Facebook community for our readers. Please do join and
see you there soon. Here is the link-
