GIVE MUSIC A CHANCE

A HOUSE AND A GUITAR first ever concert in Delhi. The concert is a rock-folk cultural evening."Give music a chance" is a concept of bringing the musical talents of North-Eastern India into the limelight. It is a solo vision of the Delhi based group called "A House and a guitar" who are actively fighting for the cause. The members of the group are simple like minded individuals from diverse background who dreams to see music as a compulsory subject in the education system of North-East India.

As a tuneful start to our mission of taking the cause of music further, we have come up with an idea of showcasing the unheard talents of the region.

Come September 23rd, 2011 the long cherished dream of our first ever gig is happening!

Swar Alap

The event is conducted by Kushal Gopalka, eminent show person & musicologist and sponsored by Swar Aalap. The event will feature Live Talk Show, Performance, AV presentation & Felicitation of senior most Indian vocalist Dr. Sushila Rani Baburao Patel. Vocalist Dr. Sushila Rani Patel can be best described in the words of Padmabhushan Janaab Naushad Ali “When I think of her, all I can think of is sheer worship”.

Dr. Sushila Rani Patel, 93 is musician, lawyer, journalist, doctor who is not satisfied with success, but only with perfection. A multi-faceted personality is the senior most performing Indian classical vocalist in the world. Disciple of Smt. Mogubai Kurdikar, she has been conferred numerous awards and titles.

Demonstrations on Jazz appreciation by well-known Jazz experts

On October 1st, Ahmed Ebrahim and Sunil Sampat will kick off the series with “Understanding Jazz Music”, an introduction to this vivacious genre of music at the Planet M bookstore, Andheri Shoppers Stop. Understanding Jazz - Lec-Dem by Ahmed Ebrahim & Sunil Sampat

The lecture enables participants to understand and appreciate the various facets of the fascinating world of Jazz, with a focus on the historical, social and artistic context of its evolution and growth. 

Ahmed Ebrahim is the founder of the Pune Jazz Club and a member of the NCPA Jazz Advisory Committee. He has successfully organised three international jazz festivals in Pune and has been working to popularise this genre of music for the last ten years.

Sunil Sampat is a Jazz historian and contributing editor to the Rolling Stone Magazine. He is also a member of the NCPA Jazz Advisory Committee.

Naresh Fernandes will present “Following the Albatross: The Jazz Journeys of Teddy Weatherford” at the Little Theatre, NCPA on October 4th, which will include archival photographs and recordings.

On October 5th, at the Crossword Bookstore, Kemps Corner, Sunil Sampat will conclude the series with “Enjoying Jazz”—an apt session just before the festivities of JazzMatazz, to ensure Mumbai will make the most of the all the fun coming their way.

‘JazzMatazz’

The National Centre for the Performing Arts announces its first-ever Jazz music festival ‘JazzMatazz’. The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai, India’s premiere art and culture institution is proud to present NCPA’s first annual international Jazz festival – NCPA JazzMatazz. This three-day festival from  October 14- 16th, 2011 will feature performances by legendary Jazz stars such as Steve Turre, Jon Faddis, Cedar Walton Trio, Louis Hayes And The Cannonball Legacy, The Three Ladies Of Blues, Beets Brothers, Harsha Makalande and Khrome and the Carlton Jazz Ensemble. NCPA JazzMatazz is supported by Godrej Properties Ltd. and SMS Meer.

With JazzMatazz, NCPA aims at bringing traditional ‘straight - through’ Jazz music back to Mumbai, creating an annual festival that will be the most anticipated event in the cultural calendar of the city. The festival begins with a fast-tempo bebop performance on October 14th with India’s legendary Jazz guru, Carlton Kitto, whose journey has been captured in the wonderful documentary film, Finding Carlton.  Jon Faddis will then take centre-stage in the second session for the day. This American jazz trumpet player, conductor, composer, and educator, about whom his friend and mentor "Dizzy" Gillespie once commented, "

Day two of the festival, October 15th will feature Steve Turre, one of the world's pre-eminent jazz innovators, trombonists and conch players. After Steve, get ready for some foot-tapping Jazz blues with The Three Ladies of Blues – a knock out performance of jazz and blues at its best. The ladies --Joan Faulkner, Joanne Bell, Harriet Lewis/Mary Thompson backed by the Gustav Csik Trio—have a swing in their music and, joy in their souls that makes for an exciting, fresh, and energetic performance. They are followed by the Cedar Walton Trio. Walton is one of the most influential musician’s active today. His original compositions are frequently recorded by other musicians, and have become part of the standard Jazz repertoire.

The season finale on October 16th, will feature Beets Brothers (Peter at the piano, Marius on guitar and Alexander on clarinet). The music of the Beets Brothers has a rare, instinctual quality of artistic expression, that captivates the audience throughout the concert. After Beets Brothers, the veteran pianist, known fondly as the A. R Rehman of Sri Lanka, Harsha Makalande along with his fusion music group Khrome will blend the fresh sound of the Piano played percussively with local drums.

JazzMatazz will conclude with a performance of a lifetime by American jazz drummer Louis Hayes and the Cannonball Legacy.Ticket prices: Rs. 1,500; Rs. 1,000; Rs. 800; 600 and special student tickets Rs. 200 against student ID.

"BARSI"

“Dhrupad Vartul Trust” cordially invites you for “BARSI” a two day “DHRUPAD MUSIC FESTIVAL”. In memory of the legendary Rudraveena Maestro late Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. The event will feature Shree Chintan Upadhyay (vocals), and Rudraveena-Surbahar Jugalbandi, by Ustad Bahauddin Dagar and Pt. Pushparaj Koshti on the October 12th.

And  on the October 13th the event will feature Smt. Kaberi Kar (vocals), and Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar (vocals). Pakhawaj accompaniment by Pt. Manik Munde and Pt. Sanjay Agle.

KRISHNA, THE COVETED LOVER

The event is a classical vocal concert of khayal recital and the theme of my presentation is Krishna, the coveted the lover. The event will feature yoga's "rock star Krishna Das kirtan. His soulful will be accompanied with Shri Anutosh Degharia on tabla and Shri Sandeep Mishra on Sarangi. 

 

 

 

‘DISHA’: Legends-Gen Next

The Shyamal Music foundation founded by Aditya Kalyanpur successfully organized the second concert of ‘Disha: Legends – Gen Next’. The event was started by the child prodigy Ragini Shankar, a mechanical engineer by education and a talented violinist. Praful Athavle, well known tabla player accompanied Ragini Shankar. She played Raga Yaman and Raghupati Raghav Rajaram.

The latter half of the show featured Shaunak Abhisheki, a leading vocalist of young generation with beautiful combination of Agra and Jaipur styles of Hindustani classical music. Tabla player Mangesh Mulye and harmonium player Sudhir Nayak accompanied Shaunak Abhisheki.

The third concert of ‘Disha: Legends – Gen Next’ will be held on the 21st of October.
